Gr 1–3—The eight stories in this collection feature a wide array of characters, including a girl who can control the weather when she is wearing a particular necklace, a cat who grows enormous after eating a bowl of yeast and warm milk, a selfish genie on a magic carpet, a man and woman on a flying apple pie, and a house that lays eggs. The brief tales stand alone, but each is equally captivating and memorable. The author's daughter, Lizza Aiken, narrates her mother's stories, and it is obvious that these tales hold a special place in her heart. Her gentle tone brings the characters to life, making listeners feel part of an intimate retelling.
VERDICT This serene audio recording honors fairy tales' original oral tradition, and this collection will be a lovely addition to elementary folktale and fairy-tale units.
