Gr 4–6—Though the information in this finely divided series overlaps considerably—aside from the illustrations and a diagram of the rock cycle in each volume—the author adroitly avoids boilerplate. The photographs, though small, offer vivid views of a wide range of landforms, geological marvels, gemstones in the rough and finished, and of buildings and other artifacts made from stone.
Minerals goes into how minerals are classified according to the Mohs Scale for hardness, as well as by luster, color, even smell and taste (readers are cautioned never to put tongues to unknown substances). Brannon extends the topic to mentions of birthstones and magnets. These don't break any new ground but merit consideration to fill gaps or deepen subject collections.
VERDICT Solid choices for classroom or library collections.
