Gr 9 Up—This series tackles many of the "biggie" issues teen guys face. Though the books are well-written, they're full of posed-looking stock photos and are visually bland. Sexuality is the most affirming regarding same-sex relationships; it covers gender stereotypes, double standards, media representations, roles, and GLBT life. Careers outlines steps readers can take to become successful in their careers and places a strong emphasis on personal responsibility. Dating deals with romantic relationships (both opposite and same-sex), as well as other social relationships. The advice covers the standards: communication, respect, etc. The chapter "Taking It to the Next Level—Or Not" clearly states the many risks of teenage sexual activity. Masculinity focuses on the (not clearly defined) "Boy Code" and what boys feel they need to be and do to be perceived as "real men." Many of the photos lose their impact because parts of images disappear into the books' gutters. For larger libraries only, if needed.
