Gr 3–6—This series has mixed results. Each volume starts off with a 10-question quiz for readers to test their knowledge. Chapter two of every book is devoted to useful, basic information. The remaining three chapters are only indirectly related to the sport. While the conversations about proper diet and exercise are helpful, the recipes, crafts, and discussions about bonding with teammates are less so. Editing errors don't help (in
Softball, one of the tips says to drink an ounce of water for every pound of body weight then contradicts that with "If you weigh 100 pounds…you should drink at least 50 ounces…of water a day."). The attempt to hype up the "girl appeal" dilutes the effectiveness of this series.
