K-Gr 4–A celebration of Black hair, written in AAVE (also known as ebonics) that will still be mostly understood by people of different backgrounds. This story references the Crown Act and frustrations with schools who have tried and try to ban African hairstyles. This focus on cultural education remains positive and emphasizes how braids are both connected to culture and a way to protect hair. One detail that resonates is mention of how much the mother pays to make sure her daughter feels fine. Unique hairstyles are depicted throughout the story, conveying the differences in hair styles. At the same time, the book shows that all types of braids should be celebrated. The illustrations use a nice warm color palette. The hair and hair accessories are the focal point for each illustration.
VERDICT A great book for cultural education and appreciation. This book will be of interest to all collections.
