Toddler-PreS–A series of animals goes through bedtime rituals with their loving grown-ups: a panda, a monkey, a lamb, a rabbit, and a bear. Sweeney crafts a soothing common-meter stanza for each page, establishing a pleasantly sleepy tone; Machell provides collage-style illustrations of cheery interiors in a variety of colors and patterns. Poking through each page is a soft pair of arms printed with an animal paw pattern, which allows the adult reader to give a cozy hug to each baby animal—or to the child listening to the story.
VERDICT This will not be an easy book to keep clean; a supplemental purchase for collections in need of something warm and fuzzy.
