PreS-Gr 3—What happens inside a mom's belly as a baby grows? This illustrated guide, intended for children awaiting a new sibling, devotes a spread to each month of gestation. The verso contains an illustration depicting the growth of the fetus and an approximation of size (e.g., at three months, it is as big as a lemon). Fun animal facts are also included; for instance, a blue whale calf weighs 1,000 times more than a human baby. The recto discusses how the mother is feeling as time passes. The final three sections are devoted to the birth, the first few hours and days of an infant's life, and a more in-depth exploration of the monthly gestation process. The ink and watercolor artwork is friendly and colorful and features renditions of the inside of the womb as well as scenes of a little girl with her father and pregnant mother. The language is soothing, though there is little room for nontraditional families (conception is described as the meeting of a "Mama" and "Papa").
VERDICT A sweet introduction to pregnancy for soon-to-be older siblings. Consider for general purchase.
