Gr 2-4–Thirty–four men and 16 women of note are profiled in this compilation of people who lived a life of integrity, set out to accomplish important deeds, and succeeded by using what the author calls “special powers,” such as hard work, curiosity, compassion, and education. Each spread includes a portrait of the hero on the left and a story on the right explaining what he or she did to make a difference. At the bottom of each profile, readers are encouraged to ask themselves a question related to the hero. For example, on Jane Goodall’s page, the author writes, “Jane taught the world to love and protect the chimpanzees. What do you love? How could you protect it?” The portraits were created by 15 different artists from around the world, so they vary in realistic details and style. Most puzzling, though, is the title. Why must the book be labeled as for boys?
VERDICT If you can tolerate the title (which, itself, might serve as a great discussion point with youth), this book can serve as a very useful resource for any young reader interested in real-life heroes or people who endeavor to promote and instill positive traits in children.
