Gr 7 Up—As the title suggests, this book compiles 10 years of teen writing on the big picture questions surrounding spirituality, faith, tolerance, gender, philosophy, and ethical and mindful living. There are also interviews and articles by adult mentors, mostly from interfaith or healing organizations. KidSpirit is a nonprofit online magazine edited by international teen editorial teams who publish art, essays, and poetry. Each issue centers on a theme chosen by teams across the United States and abroad. This work includes three to four pieces of writing from each back issue, ranging in subject from the maker movement to hijabs. With issues such as "Science and Spirit" and "Soul and Gender," this is a magazine that honors a vision of tolerance and understanding across religious ideas and addresses current topics that affect teens, personally and globally. The young Indian, Pakistani, South Korean, and American editors peer review the articles. However, most of the work presented here can be accessed on the KidSpirit website.
VERDICT This volume could be helpful as a resource for journalism and creative nonfiction classes. Pair it with anthologies published by Youth Communications wherever personal essays are popular.
