As author Carole Boston Weatherford said in a recent SLJ article, “Children deserve and will demand the truth.” Join four Black nonfiction authors who tackle difficult topics in their books with the goal of empowering young readers with knowledge and accurate, unbiased information.

You’ll also find out about a new publishing program—Read Woke™ Books, developed in partnership with Cicely Lewis, the Read Woke librarian—that seeks to amplify the voices of people of the global majority (people of African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American descent and identify as not white), provide information about groups that have been disenfranchised, share perspectives of people who have been underrepresented or oppressed, challenge social norms and disrupt the status quo, and encourage readers to take action in their community.

Author Carole Boston Weatherford will join Read Woke Books authors including Cicely Lewis, Elliott Smith, and Dr. Artika Tyner to discuss the importance of Black nonfiction authorship, lifting up authentic voices and hidden figures in history, exposing prejudices and the problems it has caused in our society, and inspiring readers to speak out against injustice.

Presenters:

Cicely Lewis, Author and Executive Editor of Read Woke™ Books, Founder of the Read Woke movement, and Librarian at Meadowcreek High School

Elliot Smith, Writer and Author, Read Woke™ Books

Dr. Artika Tyner, Author, Educator, Civil Rights Attorney, and Director of the Center on Race, Leadership and Social Justice at the University of St. Tomas School of Law
