While this book may not appeal to all readers due to its weak plot and somewhat fragmented story line, those who have ever wondered what other parts of the world are like will find themselves absorbed and longing to see Cuba for themselves.

While the picaresque format precludes either a complex plot or any significant character development, this fun romp, with a lovable narrator and enhanced by Gay's charming pencil drawings, is recommended for children graduating from beginning readers to chapter books.
