Interesting vocabulary, a touch of suspense, and a satisfying conclusion make this simple story a good addition to holiday collections. Of course, it should be followed by a reading of the reindeer’s favorite poem.
This reassuring story of new-found confidence will resonate with growing youngsters who are discovering their own capabilities. And they will relish being in on secrets withheld from the young protagonist.
While the illustrations are lovely, the story lacks tension. Raccoons that deprive a restaurant of its business and eat its food with impunity is a strange message to share with children.
