This is a well-told, well-researched story, but readers need to be aware of the fictionalized parts. The book not only shows the challenges Chester Pierce faced, it shows how people can work together to combat discrimination.
Although the final spread shows her floating along, happy as can be, with her natural hair flying free, the basic premise of a black girl's hair infested with animals, combined with the history of discrimination against black hair creates too many problems for this title to rise above. Not recommended
