Probably most interesting to readers of horror, these might occasionally spark interest in mythology.
Each formulaic overview introduces ten creatures from different cultures (heavy emphasis on Greek and Norse mythology). A double-page spread describes the monster and its backstory, as well as "how to defeat" it. Boxed text provides information about cultural origins. Slick CGI-looking illustrations will appeal to gamers, as will "Beast Power" rankings, rating qualities such as "Strength," "Repulsiveness," and "Invincibility." Ind. In somewhat sensationalized text, each book traces portrayals of the featured creature through history, from ancient belief to modern pop culture. As the titles indicate, both books up the scare-factor by muddying the distinctions of folklore and fact (Zombies to somewhat a lesser extent). Eloquent in part—though a bit skimpy, too—this is an attractive and versatile package.

Though the busy scenes won't quite work for group use, they don't keep the verses from being fun, read-aloud choices, and librarians and educators will find this a useful resource for sparking thought about the circus, food preferences, and poetry writing.
Jump Back, Paul: The Life and Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar
This multifaceted account is likely to require some introduction and context. However, it offers fine possibilities for middle school teachers and some inspiration for young writers and readers of poetry.

The original edition needn't be replaced, but collections that don't yet own the title should consider purchasing this revised version.

There are intriguing bits here and there for quick reading or browsing. Missing! and Mysterious Messages are the strongest of the lot.
Creatures introduces Bigfoot, the Chupacabra, and other
legendary beasts. Messages covers premonitions,
communication from the grave, and reincarnation. Visitors
explores UFO sightings, close encounters, and "men in black." All
three superficial volumes present possible explanations (some
earthly, some paranormal) for the reported phenomena in brief,
uninspired texts, accompanied by sidebars, stock photos, and garish
