The series presents limited information about espionage operations in the U.S., Great Britain, Israel, and Russia. Although large fonts, short sentences, and full-page photos will benefit beginning readers, the subjects themselves are too complex for a young audience. Science of Color: Investigating Light
Excellent discussions of some of physics' underlying principles, for serious younger students.
The physical science topics of sound, light, force, motion, and states of matter are explained through their applications in contexts with broader appeal (Glaciers and Stars are about matter more than their title phenomena). The textbooklike prose, accompanied by stock photographs, detailed diagrams, and well-aligned activities, emphasizes key vocabulary words. Although aimed at elementary-school readers, the concepts are much more advanced. Glos., ind. The series is formulaic, but readers fascinated by high-powered, showy "wheels" will be satisfied. The books include longer-than-usual glossaries. Ind. Caution in the Kitchen!: Germs, Allergies, and Other Health Concerns
A simple yet engaging look at food and nutrition for elementary-age readers.
In each volume, four or five short chapters give a casual introduction to very basic nutritional concepts. Each brightly colored page contains two or three beginning-reader-pitched sentences, color photographs with boxed captions, and generous open space.
