The author and illustrator are the U.S. candidates for the international honor given biennially to book creators for children.
Author Linda Sue Park and illustrator Kadir Nelson have been nominated for the 2022 Hans Christian Andersen Award, the International Board on Books for Young People announced Wednesday.
The two are among 62 candidates from 33 countries who were nominated for the biennial award, the prestigious international prize which is given to an author and illustrator who have "made an important and lasting contribution to literature for young people."
Jacqueline Woodson won the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Author Award. Switzerland's Albertine won the illustrator honor.
Park, a Newbery Medal winner whose most recent titles include Prairie Lotus and Gurple and Preen, reacted to the news of her nomination Wednesday on Twitter. "The first time I met @KadirNelson (maybe 12 yrs ago?), we were at a signing event and I loaned him a Sharpie. Beyond honored to be nominated with him. THANK YOU, @USBBY!"

The Hans Christian Andersen Award shortlist will be announced in January 2022 and the winners revealed at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in spring of 2022.
