Cherry Lake. 2010. PLB $24.21; ebook $24.21. Gr 1-3—Somewhat similar to ABDO's "Going to Work" books (see below), this series focuses on community workers. The focus is on basic tasks, what to expect on a visit, what one needs to know to do the job, its value to society, and variations of it—vets on the farm and at the zoo, for example. The attractive spreads alternate text with large photos of workers. "Think," "Create," and "Ask Questions" sidebars provide questions for discussion with parents or teachers. Colored text in bold-faced font highlights new vocabulary words. Plenty of smiling folks are pictured on the covers and within, including a medical worker wearing a stethoscope, a police officer with a dog, and an office worker. These titles will inform children and eliminate uncertainty about new experiences. GOLDISH, Meish. Air Force: Civilian to Airman. reprods. ISBN 978-1-936088-10-2; ISBN 978-1-936088-83-6. Gr 3-6—Complemented by exciting, action-packed photos, these captivating narratives follow a young recruit from initial sign up through the first days of orientation and learning to follow the orders of a commander or drill sergeant, through to a grueling graduation test and the prospect of a future in related military careers. Pictures illustrate grimacing faces as young men complete strenuous body-building exercises and strength training. This series offers more to young male readers than it does to a female audience as it has only a few token pictures of women in training. MARKARIAN, Margie. Web sites. CIP. Raintree. 2010. PLB $29; pap. $7.99. Gr 2-4—This high-interest series delivers an abundance of informative photos and large-font writing that's full of action. Even the titles pique one's curiosity by first posing the kind of question kids want to ask and then stating how to explore some very interesting work. Fact boxes provide fun detail to keep readers engaged, and ballooned photo captions identify things in the pictures. Each spread explains one of the many jobs people do in a zoo, a museum, a construction job in the Antarctic, etc., and every one of them sounds exciting. MORTENSEN, Lori. A Day at the Fire Station. (First Graphics: My Community Series). illus. further reading. glossary. index. Web sites. CIP. Capstone. 2010. RTE $26.65; pap. $5.95. Gr 1-2—Each graphic-format title begins with a question ("Ever wonder what goes on at a fire station?"), and continues with minimal text and dialogue balloons. The simple, bold, and brightly colored cartoon drawings of the people, places, and animals involved in going to the dentist or taking a pet to the vet reveal many activities and tasks, helping ease the uncertainty and fear of a visit; while the other books will satisfy curious kids with their descriptions of the daily activities on a farm and the excitement of a fire call. Most characters appear pleasant, with the exception of some slightly scary drawings of masked faces on the cover and within Going to the Dentist, an otherwise excellent title that should be shared with an adult who can explain the images. Gr 1-3—These narratives are simple yet informative and printed in an easy-to-read font. Each one begins with a simple introduction explaining the importance of the job. Subsequent chapters, sprinkled with "Did You Know?" sidebars, broadly explain responsibilities, requirements, and preparation, as well as what happens during a typical day in the position. A "History Lesson" in each book discusses, for example, when U.S. schools began to provide counseling and offers period photos, and a "School News" page includes brief stories and facts, such as a short profile of Laura Bush and a mention of International School Library Month in Librarians. Eye-catching pages of yellows and blues, large bold blue chapter headings, and many smiling faces of real people at work offer visual appeal. A friendly look at the tasks, responsibilities, and value of people who work in a school.

Additional bulleted lists and text boxes under such captions as "Finding a Job," "You Will Need," and "Handy Hint" address such specifics as the skills and education needed to land positions, while other sidebars provide personal accounts of experiences in the fields. These inclusions make the page layout a little busy and may distract some readers. BURGAN, Michael. Bat Researcher. chart. map. ISBN 978-1-60870-170-4; ISBN 978-1-60870-295-4. LC 2009048412. Many captioned pictures, additional text boxes, and lots of personal accounts and descriptions add to the thrill as the books discuss storm chasing or the gross factor involved in inspecting a sewer. Other titles provide great detail on the history of the forces and the physical training and personal qualities and skills needed to meet the demands of active combat and other activities at home and abroad. Additional attention is given to the role that living and working in an environmentally conscious world has on helping guide readers on a career path. Gr 8 Up—These titles open with the creation and development of the agency in question, background that provides the basis for investigation into specific agency jobs and their required skills, significant events, extraordinary weapons, and international activities. Chapters offer numerous accounts of actual on-the-job happenings, including what transpired during the Columbine shootings in SWAT Teams and tales of early land fraud in Secret Service. Information on job training and physical and mental requirements creates fascinating reading. The Bottom Line
The series for younger readers mainly explore community helpers and introduce the world of work in broad terms, whereas those for middle- and upper-level students provide more career options and more explicit and detailed job descriptions. Going to the Dentist, from Capstone's "First Graphics: My Community" series, will need adult explanations, and Bearport's "Becoming a Soldier" will mainly find an audience in male readers. Otherwise, each series has a strong presentation and will have broad appeal; selection for an individual library will be greatly influenced by the location and population of the student body.
