K-Gr 2—A picture book—style series that gently introduces school resource officers and classroom safety. Police in Our School reviews the concept of school resource officers and works to alleviate fears about their presence. Lockdown Drill lays out basic guidelines. The goal is to go over concepts from a student's perspective within a funny narrative. The rhyme scheme is bumpy, and there are times when the illustrations don't quite follow the narrative. The target audience is elementary school children, but third graders might find the voice too young. The effort to couch scary topics in fun and humor is a safe bet, but as a result the books feel a little less substantive, even for a young audience. However, adults looking for a text to explain changing school environments will find this set a good starting place.
VERDICT Despite shortcomings, these titles will likely be useful in early grade school classrooms before talking about visiting officers or practicing various safety drills.
