Fan Takeover!

Gr 5 Up–Written by 15-year-old white YouTube influencer Mia Fizz, this is a narratived based on her real experiences. Mia wants to shake up her vlog’s content by letting fans “take over” her social media by voting for her participation in experiences that are outside of her comfort zone. With that situation making her anxious, Mia also struggles with a new crush and finding a last-minute birthday present for her sister, Sienna. While the message of gaining confidence through new experiences is a valuable one, (and Mia has a built-in audience of fans for this already), the book revolves around social media so heavily that it becomes limiting. Ultimately, the characters aren’t strongly developed or diverse enough to really resonate with kids who aren’t into influencer culture, and Mia’s charmed life lacks universal appeal.
