K-Gr 3–Welcome back to the world of the Cookie & Broccoli! It’s Halloween Costume Day at school, and Hollywood Cookie and Super Broccoli are in for a day of tricks and treats. Throughout the day, the characters learn why it’s not cool to scare people, how to not judge someone by their costume and take the time to get to know them, and how to not be afraid of everything. They even meet “Squatchy,” who has a terrific costume—or does he? This newest addition to the early graphic novel series gives readers a story of acceptance and overcoming obstacles, with not only their friends but also within themselves. The book contains three chapters, a section with tips for a safe Halloween, and an epilogue—each of these is an opportunity for conversation. Anthropomorphic food friends give the graphic novel a more comical side that only adds to the storytelling. With “punny” costumes like bacon dressed up as a pig, garlic dressed as a vampire, and tomato as ketchup, readers will enjoy the colorful, easy-to-decipher illustrations throughout. Be prepared for laughter!
VERDICT Fans of “Pizza and Taco,” “Elephant & Piggie,” “Narwhal and Jelly,” or any Dav Pilkey books will love this graphic novel.
