Gr 9 Up—International best-selling crime writer Anne Perry expands her "Put Your Heart on the Page" video series with this third entry, allowing a wider audience to hear what the author regularly talks about at literary festivals and conventions. Similar in format and length to the first two installments, this episode features Perry seated in what could be her parlor speaking directly to the camera while describing a variety of methods to subtly develop a story's characters. Seven chapters of approximately 10 minutes each span topics such as creating relatable and interdependent characters, building tension among personalities, and constructing backstory. Chapters are easily accessible through the root menu. Seven suggested writing exercises are also included. The presentation is neither exciting nor showy, but considering that Perry has published nearly 100 books and sold more than 25 million copies, her expertise is a proven and valuable asset to aspiring writers. VERDICT Offering helpful writing advice designed to be accessed either in brief fragments or as a whole, this is a good choice for high school and college creative writing courses.—Jennifer Verbrugge, Minnesota Department of Education, Roseville, MN
