This Cormac McCarthy–like tale (but less bleak) for middle grade readers has a vivid sense of place, an unusual mystery with genuine scares, and a satisfying, if bittersweet, ending that will appeal to readers looking for something a little different.
The adults are present and engaged in Bell’s life, and he does not have to face this alone, a point that is sometimes absent in books like this. One of the best stories about bullying for middle grades. Highly recommended.
