Gr 4-8–Sandgren’s debut middle grade novel is a hit for readers seeking a fast-paced adventure. Ruby has never known where she came from. Growing up she was looked after by many yet parented by none on a remote island in Hawaii. One day, her uncle and grandmother suddenly “find” her when she didn’t know she was lost, and whisk her away to their fancy New York City home. Ruby finds herself part of the prestigious Callhoun family, well known for their magical gift of sight, but her own gift has the potential to be far more dangerous. Aligned with her new neighbors and classmates, Ruby sets off on an adventure to discover some deep family secrets, including why she has this special gift and who may want to hurt her because of it. This book feels like a younger sibling to Brandon Sanderson’s The Rithmatist in plot and writing style. With no romance and very minimal violence, this is the perfect pick for strong or advanced readers looking for an age-appropriate title. The author ties up loose ends, while leaving the door open for a sequel.
VERDICT An excellent choice for all readers looking for an adventure tale with a hint of magic. A recommended purchase for middle grade collections.
