Practical Steps to Digital Research: Strategies and Skills for School Libraries

250p. bibliog. index. Libraries Unlimited/Teacher Ideas. Jul. 2018. pap. $50. ISBN 9781440856723.
The author of three other research guides, Stanley turns her attention to digital research skills. Her experience is evident from the practical lessons and skills covered in each chapter. "Points To Ponder" start off each subsection, with a summary of the ideas to come. The first section of the book discusses how students, classroom teachers, and librarians should prepare for research. Next, Stanley lays out the steps of the research process, offering many useful charts and organizers, including ones for Creative Commons licenses and note taking. Finally, she explores how to apply research. The author stresses the importance of laying a foundation by teaching students how to access print materials. Scattered throughout are Hyperdocs for students and teachers as well as scripted conversations between students and the librarian. Common Core and Model School Library standards for high school and occasionally middle school are included in the lessons.
VERDICT Densely packed with information and resources, this volume gives middle and high school librarians, particularly those new to the topic, everything they need to teach digital research skills.
