Gr 7 Up-Growing up in Toronto, high school freshman Julie Nolan has always known that being queer is alright. That's why having to hide her crush on her best friend Lorelei is so hard. However, Lorelei has a strictly religious family and has always flaunted her relationship with boys. Another issue looms in her own house. Her mother, who is struggling after giving birth to Julie's much younger brother, starts displaying seriously disturbing behaviors—she believes she is dead and has taken to lying in graveyards and shopping for caskets. As Julie wrestles with both of these situations, her blossoming friendship with a boy named Henry leads her to believe that maybe she is bisexual, given that her feelings for Henry are so similar to her feelings for Lorelei. Julie navigates her romantic relationships, friendships, and her family drama with emotions and actions that at times make her seem younger than her intended age. There are many stronger titles with bisexual characters and parental mental health issues.
VERDICT An optional purchase for libraries serving teens.-Kate Olson, Bangor School District, WI
