My Special One and Only

PreS-K—Bridget Fidget and her favorite toy, Captain Cat, are inseparable. The child lovingly refers to Captain Cat as her "special one and only." When she receives money for her lost tooth, she takes Captain Cat with her on a shopping trip. Amid the bustle and excitement of the toy store, it disappears. The child is heartbroken; how will she ever find Captain Cat in this large store? With the help of a classmate, she locates her toy and befriends the girl who cared for it in her absence. Bridget's energetic personality is artfully displayed in the colorful illustrations, reminiscent of cartoon animation and complete with sound effects ("Spizzooom!!"). This book is a wonderful choice for children who may have lost special toys of their own and a great companion to Shirley Hughes's classic David and Dog (Prentice Hall, 1976).—Stephanie Rivera, Naperville Public Library, IL
Bridget Fidget returns, this time with money to burn at a toy store, where she loses Captain Cat, her cherished stuffed animal--and another child finds him. Verbal slapstick abounds in the vivacious text ("She spizzoomed through the revolving doors"), and the art features hilarious set pieces, as when a wailing-in-a-corner Bridget is said to be having "some 'quiet time.'"
