Gr 9 Up—This installment in the series provides excerpts from nearly 150 documents, spanning from early America to present day, ranging from court cases to explorers' notes. A valuable preliminary essay covers the development of social and political constructs of LGBTQ identity. The further reading resources listed after each entry are also useful. The brief extracts of primary sources makes this volume feel more like an annotated bibliography. The foreword, "Evaluating and Interpreting Primary Documents," is an introduction to the entire series, not to this specific book, but it isn't identified as such, so readers may be confused at its focus on the Chicano movement. An important concern, too, is that documents ostensibly broaching nonconforming gender expressions in Native American communities and other marginalized groups such as African Americans and women, supply few insights from the groups observed; most entries reflect the views of presumably straight outsiders.
VERDICT Flaws aside, this book is a strong addition to both reference and circulating collections.–Francisca Goldsmith, Library Ronin, Worcester, MA
