Chip and Curly: The Great Potato Race

Sleeping Bear. May 2019. 32p. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781585364084.
PreS-Gr 2–Get ready for more potato-related puns than you can shake a stick at. Chip the potato chip is determined to win the Golden Bushel Award in the potato sack race. But there is a new spud in town by the name of Curly who has quite a spring in his step. As the race proceeds, it looks like Curly’s got it in the bag (or potato sack) until he trips over a tree root. Chip chooses the high road, and doubles back to help Curly, who ultimately wins in the end, dashing all of Chip’s dreams of winning. But wait, there’s still a relay ahead, and Chip and Curly would make a great team. The cartoon illustrations keep the race moving along at a snappy pace while the text simultaneously gives a clever nod and a wink on nearly every spread.
VERDICT Young readers and their caregivers will get a kick out of deconstructing all the potato puns, while cheering for these athletic spuds. A winner
