ea vol: 32p. (Renacuajos: cuentos de hadas atípicos). Crabtree. Aug. 2020. Tr. $26.60.
Gr 1-3 –This whimsical series offers classic fairy tales with quirky and unexpected plot twists. In Blanca Nieves ve la luz (Snow White Sees the Light), the dwarves run a shoe factory that houses old, grubby, unwanted shoes. But magically, fashionable shoes appear overnight. How? When Sleeping Beauty wakes up after being asleep for 100 years, the world is an entirely different place that she doesn’t recognize. These clever titles offer quality translations, colorful illustrations, and plenty of white space around text for easy letter recognition and comprehension. However, the illustrations fail to depict diversity in the characters’ skin tones. Gr 2-5 –Short chapters explain why people may feel certain emotions, how to manage those feelings, and how to identify them in others. Siento aburrimiento (I Feel Bored) states that boredom can happen at home or at school and even when we’re doing something we enjoy. Practical ways to handle feelings are shared, which caregivers and educators will find useful in their attempts to teach healthy coping mechanisms. Positive emotions such as confidence and love are presented as feelings that readers can understand and also use to help those around them. However, ability diversity is not represented visually. Discussion questions, a visual glossary, and suggestions for further exploration with the help of trusted adults are included. VERDICT This series offers a starting point to navigate all types of emotions, but it falls short in its representation of ability diversity.

Chandler, Matt.
ISBN 9781496685131.
ea vol: 32p. (América Embrujada). Capstone. Aug. 2020. Tr. $28.65.
Gr 3-8 –These spooky titles take readers on adventures through some of America’s most haunted places. Popular and lesser-known structures, such as the St. Augustine Lighthouse, the Alamo, and the White House, are examined through the lens of paranormal history. Each book focuses on a different geographic area: Alcatraz Island and the West, Gettysburg and the eastern United States, the Alamo and the American South, and Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery and the Midwest. Short vignettes describe basic facts about each landmark. Although this series provides high-quality translations, Fantasmas de El Álamo y otros lugares embrujados del sur is a weak spot. The text mentions the Myrtles Plantation and Chloe, an African American girl who was enslaved and is said to haunt the property. The treatment of slavery and plantations is problematic and warrants additional explanation on the part of educators. VERDICT More historical context and explanation would be useful in these books.

The highlight of this year’s Spanish series is “¡Conocimiento a tope!” (Crabtree) for its comprehensive coverage of exciting STEAM topics. Buyers can purchase the entire set or an individual series for specialized collections and subject-focused classrooms. Ideas de la naturaleza, for example, explains how engineers study nature in order to develop systems and solve problems. “Artes en acción” will appeal to art lovers.
