Story Seeds Podcast Brings Author, Reader Collaborations to Listeners

Betsy Bird hosts a new podcast that shares adventures with authors and young readers, who create short stories together.

A new podcast that pairs kids ages six to 10 with authors to create short stories aims to spark creativity in its young listeners. Betsy Bird, a librarian who blogs at “A Fuse #8 Production,” hosts The Story Seeds Podcast, which was created by Sandhya Nankani.

“I deeply believe that all kids are creative rock stars and that deep listening by grown-ups and collaboration can be modeled and is what kids need more of today. This was the inspiration for Story Seeds, and I’m so excited that Betsy signed on to be our host,” says Nankani, the founder of Literary Safari, which produces the podcast.

Story Seeds is an all-female venture—created, hosted, produced, sound designed, web-designed, and illustrated by women, according to Nankani.

Season one includes a coronavirus PSA by Jason Reynolds and episodes feature Reynolds as well as authors Dan Gutman, Veera Hiranandani, Chris Grabenstein, Aram Kim, Rajani larocca, Carlos Hernandez, Susan Muaddi Darraj, Bil Lepp, and Tracey Baptiste. They meet with children in New York City, sometimes take a little field trip, and turn their discussion and adventure into a growing story.

A new episode—including bonus episodes featuring Bird interviewing authors—will drop Thursdays through mid-July.

Literary Safari is also developing activity kits for kids and a companion writing journal with prompts for children to accompany the summer reading theme “Imagine Your Story.”
