An upside of sheltering in place? That could be more time for reading. Library patronage has recently seen a boost, with OverDrive reporting a spike of 30 percent in digital checkouts since March 13, when the U.S. government formally declared the coronavirus epidemic a national emergency.
Comparing the two weeks before and two weeks after March 13, there was a 40 percent hike in ebook checkouts, according to OverDrive, a distributor of books to libraries and schools. Meanwhile, audiobooks rose 10 percent, the lower growth likely due to a decrease in commuting, per David Burleigh, OverDrive’s Director of Brand Marketing & Communication.
YA and kids’ books have been among the most popular genres in public libraries. Ebook checkouts of juvenile fiction went up 68 percent; juvenile nonfiction, 71 percent. Since April 1, 175,000 Harry Potter ebooks and audiobooks have circulated, courtesy of a partnership between OverDrive and Pottermore Publishing as part of the Harry Potter at Home program.
Geographic trends were similarly driven by the public health crisis. The first states that implemented shelter-in-place orders, California, Washington, New York, and Ohio, had the largest gains in library checkouts.
On the school side, OverDrive also reports an uptick in circulation, comparing four weeks before and after March 13. In addition, installs of the company’s mobile app for schools, Sora, have more than doubled, while new users have nearly tripled.
Following are the most popular digital checkouts in YA and juvenile titles via OverDrive for the period of March 13 to April 8, 2020.
