School Library Journal, The Horn Book, and Cuyahoga County Public Library have partnered to present a professional development event for librarians and caregivers on early learning. The second Fostering Lifelong Learners: Investing in our Children will bring together early childhood education professionals – pediatricians, librarians, educators, publishers and children’s literature experts – to focus this critical and complex early learning arena, with new initiatives and funding pointing to innovation in how we support our children’s first years.
We’ll look at recent developments in early learning, strategies for effective partnership development, expertise on materials selection, and insight into trends in technology with kids, all illustrating the public library’s role as a community hub for this key area. The day will include a keynote address by Robert Needlman, M.D., Founder, Reach out and Read, Professor of Pediatrics, and co-Author, Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care, panel presentations, and interactive stations demonstrating library programs that help children build important early literacy skills including, Exploration Station, Mathlete, Ipad Lab, and circulating Toy Collection. Plus, we’ll have a special lunch visit with author Kevin Henkes.
Cuyahoga County Library will offer tours of new and exciting early learning spaces on September 18, 2014. Inspired by children’s museums with highly interactive activity stations, the spaces are focused on building six key early literacy skills: developing vocabulary, print recognition, print awareness, narrative adeptness, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness. Registration for the tour will open this summer. All registrants will be notified.
Attendance is free but space is limited so secure your spot today.
