Grants for Making; 2015 Int’l Latino Book Awards Announced | SLJTeen News

Youth Service America (YSA) is calling on kids to make this a Summer of Creativity. YSA, through support from Disney | ABC Television Group, will award Summer of Creativity Grants to young change-makers who have ideas for projects that positively impact their community.

Kids in the U.S., ages five–18, may apply for the grants by submitting ideas for service projects that will make a difference in their local communities. One hundred and twenty-five winners will be awarded individual $500 grants to implement their projects. Select grantees will have a chance to be recognized on Good Morning America or their local ABC affiliate. Applications will be accepted through August 10 at YSA.org/BeInspired.

“With half the world’s population under the age of 25, our future depends on helping young people to find their voice, take action, and make a positive impact in their communities. We know that young people are uniquely suited to help solve problems—if given the opportunity,” said Steven A. Culbertson, president and CEO of YSA. “We need youth to be leaders and problem solvers today, not just the leaders of a distant tomorrow. Disney ABC Television Group’s Summer of Creativity is about shining a bright light on the incredible power of youth to use their ingenuity to change the world.”

EH140605-YalsaThe Margaret Edwards Literacies Programming Grant awards $5,000 for a library to use towards improving or expanding the services and programs it provides to help teens master text-based literacies. Funds may be used to provide new or support ongoing successful programs. All YALSA members who represent a public library or school library are eligible to apply. Up to five grants will be awarded in 2015.

Successful applicants will address teen needs beyond traditional print reading comprehension and be inclusive of activities that help teens build skills to successfully navigate text-based literacies in both a print and an online world. Appropriate activities include but are not limited to navigating nonlinear text, repeatedly evaluating resources, sifting through extraneous materials, inferring meaning, and using a range of features to compose unified messages. Potential applicants can visit YALSA’s wiki to learn more about multiple literacies.

Applications must be submitted by November 1. Each essay portion of the application below allows for up to 350 words.

International Latino Book Awards announced

The International Latino Book Awards (ILBA) took place on June 27 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis as part of the American Library Association Annual Meeting. The largest Latino literary and cultural awards in the United States, ILBA honored 246 artists and book creators, including the author of 2015 Pura Belpré winner I Lived on Butterfly Hill, Marjorie Agosín. Below are the honorees in the young adult categories.

Read-Proud-Listen-Proud-logo_center-1024x998LGBTQ audiobooks resource

Listening Library and Penguin Young Readers recently launched a new resource for LGBTQ teens, parents, teachers, and librarians: Read Proud Listen Proud. Readers can find suggested books and audiobooks highlighting LGBTQ issues and characters who are positive role models, along with author interviews and discussion guides at www.readproudlistenproud.com. The site was inspired by the We Need Diverse Books movement and award-winning author Ann Bausum’s Stonewall (Viking, 2015), one of the first nonfiction chronicles of the gay rights movement written for young adults.

The two publishers launched the site at American Library Association annual conference in San Francisco and gave away thousands of pairs of rainbow-colored sunglasses at the San Francisco Pride Parade and the Moscone Convention Center, where the ALA Conference took place.

Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, announced its certified status as a Google for Education Partner, and the integration of Google tools into Gale products on June 30. Users may now login to their school or library’s Gale In Context resource using Google Account credentials and download, save, and share articles using Google Apps for Education including Drive and Docs.

“We’re excited to partner with a leader in technology and search to integrate our great content and innovative platforms into student workflow,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager, Gale, in a press release. “Our collaboration with Google positions us firmly in the edtech space, but most importantly, it improves access to research material that engages students and instructors and improves learning outcomes.”

Once logged in as a Google user to a Gale In Context resource, users can download, save, and share content—including any highlights or notes they’ve added to documents within the product. Gale is also one of 15 partners to pilot Google’s new Classroom share button, which allows teachers and students to share content from third-party websites to assignments and announcements in Google Classroom. The Classroom share button will be available within In Context products this summer and will allow educators to link Gale content to classroom assignments.  For more information, visit http://blog.gale.com/google-incontext/.

children in crisis logoUPDATE: REFORMA’s Children in Crisis project

During the ALA Council III meeting at the ALA Annual Conference that took place on Tuesday, January 29, a resolution passed on improving access to Spanish and bilingual books for children in detention centers, work that was initiated by REFORMA members and Library Journal Movers and Shakers Oralia Garza de Cortés, Lucía Gonzalez, and Patrick Sullivan. The organization resolved that the American Library Association (ALA), on behalf of its members:

  1. urges ALA members and units to support the REFORMA Children in Crisis project for the continued delivery of books to refugee children and teens;
  1. encourages the director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop a partnership with the United States Customs and Border Protection agency to ensure that unaccompanied refugee children have access to books and programming in those children’s native languages, whether they speak Spanish, indigenous languages, or other tongues, and bilingual books;
  1. urges libraries in affected areas to provide services and programs for and with detained minors while under they are in the care of government-designated service providers; and
  1. encourages ALA members and other relevant ALA units and affiliates to develop materials that meet the information and recreation needs of refugee children, teens, and their guardians, and to share that information with librarians in other affected communities.

  1. I was disappointed to see that your website published only the first place winners in the International Latino Book Awards 2015 competition. Although my book, Noldo and his magical scooter on the March with the St. Patrick’s Battalion (Starry Night Publishing) placed second, as did many others (as well third places) in different categories, I believe providing the names of all the finalists provides a broader view of Latino writings available to young people. Mine in particular opens up historical and cultural values about a young Mexican American boy growing up in San Antonio in the 1950s and how he goes back in time to the 1840s at a crucial time in U.S.-Mexico history. Please reconsider the article and publish all the names in the young adult categories. Thank you.
