On a recent flight I read Jack Gantos’s sequel to Dead End in Norvelt (2011), and attracted stares from my fellow passengers because of the snorting, chuckling, and guffawing coming from seat 26C. From Norvelt to Nowhere (2013, both Farrar) is laugh-out-loud funny and full of historical tidbits that left me thinking that I need to review the Cuban Missile Crisis era.
Our friends at Macmillan want to give you a chance to share in the hilarity, but you have to work for it. Remember Miss Volker’s obituary writing and penchant for history? Be prepared to share what would be your town’s “This Day in History?” and enter to win a visit from the ever-charming Jack Gantos. You’ll be glad you did.
