A “striking” illustration and a feature well of articles covering an unprecedented national wave of censorship were honored with 2022 FOLIO Awards.

School Library Journal (SLJ) received two awards in the annual honors recognizing the best in media, announced September 13 by FOLIO.

“Striking Back,” SLJ’s February cover, has won an Ozzie Award, honoring design excellence, for cover design among B2B publications in the under-25,000 circulation category. The illustration is by Doug Chayka, art direction by Mark Tuchman, SLJ creative director.

In the 2022 Eddies—honoring editorial achievement in print and digital media—SLJ has won for best overall series of articles in B2B publishing for its coverage of censorship, also in February.

Feature stories included: Fighting for the Right to Read: Librarians lead the battle for Intellectual Freedom; Battle Tested: A school librarian shares her story by Martha Hickson; On the Frontline: Stories from the SLJ tipline by Colleen Connolly; and Anatomy of a Challenge: An examination of a Leander, TX, book ban, which preceded a pattern of challenges nationwide, by Colleen Connolly.

Coverage was edited and produced by Sarah Bayliss, SLJ senior features editor, Kara Yorio, senior news editor, and SLJ staff.

In 2020, SLJ garnered two Eddies, one for a cover story addressing the state of publishing for tweens, the second a staff-wide effort to inform and serve readers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SLJ won the Eddie Award for Series of Articles for the package of stories in the April 2019 issue that focused on how schools are incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) approaches into libraries, classrooms, and school culture.

SLJ took home its second 2019 Eddie, this one in the Single Article category, for Kathy Ishizuka’s story "Can Diverse Books Save Us?", an analysis of the results from SLJ’s Diverse Books Survey.
