High Interest Readers | Hi-Lo & Guided Reading Series Nonfiction

While hi-lo (high-interest, low readability) books are aimed at an older audience, they support literacy by providing engaging, age-appropriate titles to striving readers. These new and forthcoming series provide a variety of approachable and engaging texts.

Beginning reader and hi-lo texts are carefully crafted with readability in mind. Aimed at children just learning how to read, beginning reader texts use short sentences featuring common sight words, repeating sentence structures, and visual cues to help readers gain independence as they develop their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. Several of this season’s beginning reader offerings support early literacy skills while teaching about other subjects, ranging from sign language to social-emotional learning. While hi-lo (high-interest, low readability) books are aimed at an older audience, they similarly support literacy by providing engaging, age-appropriate titles to striving readers who need texts at a lower reading level. The hi-lo selections below include a range of nonfiction topics, including relevant subjects like natural disasters and diseases. Librarians will find a variety of approachable and engaging texts in these new and forthcoming series.

Gr 2-5 –This series takes a comic book inspired approach to exploring the natural world. Told from the perspective of Professor Ax, an axolotl looking for a new generation of superheroes, each book explores an animal adaptation, such as regeneration and camouflage. The books cleverly treat physical features like superpowers, and give several examples of animals with these traits along with information about how they use them. For example, when a peacock is presented, readers are instructed to shake the book in order to see its feathers encouraging active reading.
