The National Council of Teachers of English has announced the 2020 winners of its children’s book awards.

The winner of the Charlotte Huck Award is Room on Our Rock by Kate and Jol Temple, illustrated by Terri Rose Baynton (Kane Miller).

The award honors fiction titles, for children ages three to 12, that have “the potential to transform children’s lives by inviting compassion, imagination, and wonder.”

The Charlotte Huck Honor Books are Between Us and Abuela by Mitali Perkins, illustrated by Sara Palacios (Farrar); I Can Make This Promise by Christine Day (HarperCollins/Harper); New Kid by Jerry Craft (HarperCollins); Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga (HarperCollins/Harper); and When Aidan Became a Brother by Kyle Lukoff, illustrated by Kaylani Juanita (Lee & Low).

The 2020 Orbis Pictus Award for children’s nonfiction goes to A Place to Land: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Speech that Inspired a Nation by Barry Wittenstein, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney (Holiday House).

The honor titles are Manhattan: Mapping The Story Of An Island by Jennifer Thermes (Abrams); Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré by Anika Denise (HarperCollins/Harper); Soldier for Equality by Duncan Tonatiuh (Abrams); 1919: The Year That Changed America by Martin W. Sandler (Bloomsbury); and The Poison Eaters by Gail Jarrow (Calkins Creek).

The Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children—which recognizes a living American poet “for his or her aggregate work for children ages 3–13"—is given every two years. The 2019 honoree was Paul B. Janeczko.
