High fantasy and detailed world building mark these titles for fans of Lord of the Rings.

Your fantasy readers were likely been waiting on tenterhooks for this one. Set thousands of years before “The Lord of the Rings,” this high fantasy series with a large, racially diverse cast has created lots of buzz.

Gr 6-10–Will, a 15-year-old white boy, wishes to enter Battleschool, but he is chosen as a ranger’s apprentice instead and tasked with protecting the kingdom. This high fantasy kickoff to the “Ranger Apprentice” series delivers plenty of action and adventure set in a well-constructed world. Many other series volumes will keep voracious fantasy fans busy, too.

Gr 8 Up–After a sister’s betrayal stops the world from turning, leaving half of it in frozen darkness and the other half in a blazing desert, two goddess daughters embark on a dangerous quest to save their planet. The engrossing world-building in this Asian-influenced fantasy adventure will please fans drawn to the history of Middle Earth.

Gr 9 Up–Tarisai, who is dark-skinned but of indeterminate race, is magically bound to obey her mother’s command that she infiltrate the Crown Prince’s inner council and slay him. Instead, she fights to follow her own path. Fans of the “Lord of the Rings” cinematic franchise will like the lush, lyrical writing and epic world-building here.
