PreS-Gr 1—What do you do if you have two cans plus a canoe and you want to make stew? The cockatoos from Murguia's hilarious Cockatoo, Too are back, and in the canoe they make two-can stew (stirring it with the oars). But when two toucans march toward the inviting aroma and hear the cockatoos cheerfully announce, "Toucans, too!" they hear "Toucan Stew" and promptly run away. When they return, mollified, and help the cockatoos make a new two-can stew, the local gnus join in, and the cuckoos, too. "Cuckoo stew???" Uh-oh.
VERDICT With its bold watercolor backgrounds and vivid characters, this picture book is a superb reminder that it's never too early to start playing with language. A fun read-aloud for storytimes and language arts classrooms.
