With a focus on process management, library specialist Rush (Bringing Genius Hour to Your Library) has compiled a handbook for “soloist” librarians, or those working by themselves or with only one or two others. Streamlining processes is key, and the author shares how to do so in 10 areas of the daily library routine, such as organizing one’s desk and storing and ordering supplies. Takeaways include the importance of effectiveness, efficiency, and adaptability. However, much of the information is overly basic—the author defines packing slips and purchase orders and offers instructions on how to lift. A few case studies, mostly pertaining to school libraries, are included.
VERDICT Those who are new to a soloist position at a small library or who lack prior experience in a business setting may find some of the suggestions useful. For others, much of the information will not be applicable or is too elementary for their needs.
