Gr 1-4–Following well-known superhero origin stories, readers will find familiar character traits or life lessons. For example, the Incredible Hulk’s section discusses dealing with anger. Lotowycz says that it’s OK to be angry, but then gives tips on calming yourself when those feelings arise. Each character’s section is about five pages; more popular characters run a bit longer. The book contains graphic boxes highlighting important ideas and illustrations that mimic some traditional comic elements. Comics fans might not like the lack of a comic layout, but having all the origin stories in one resource might draw in the target audience. The mindfulness and self-help sections are very reader-friendly and have clear connections to the characters.
VERDICT The target audience, hopefully, will get excited about the mindfulness and character-building sections. Could appeal to avid readers of comics or huge fans of these superheroes who are seeking self-help material.
