PreS-K–This title provides a different take on a popular subject. Bright, colorful illustrations of plants and animals accompany the text of the Bible verse Corinthians (“Love is patient, love is kind...”); however, the message has universal appeal regardless of religious affiliation. Escobar’s illustrations work well with the text; for example, an illustration of a boar getting a piece of fruit from a tree is paired with text stating, “It does not look out.” The next page shows the boar feeding five piglets the fruit, with the accompanying lines, “for its own interests.” The artwork also captures the emotions of the text. The words “Love is not happy with evil” are accompanied by an image of a crimson sky, and yellow flames start to engulf an old tree. A branch has broken off of the tree, and a pheasant is flying away. Many interesting details in the pictures will appeal to young children, and the book lends itself to discussion about abstract concepts, such as patience and kindness.
VERDICT A recommended purchase. This universal theme will find an audience with all children.
