PreS-K–A sweet novelty book has its charms as simile follows simile in rhyming, patterned language, with most of the humor coming from the double set of illustrations for each comparison. The first illustration of a canoe shows it looking a bit perturbed as it walks over desert, but it soon finds its happy place on a lake; there is a pirate who loves his “X” and a witch who loves her “hex,” and then “Although these pairings are all true, sometimes simpler words will do…To put it plainly…I LOVE YOU!” Some similes will be easily understood by young children (“like feet love to dance”) while others, e.g., a reference to Jane and Tarzan, may be a stretch.
VERDICT This engaging book could become a favorite in some preschool settings.
