PreS-Gr 3–There has been a plethora of optimistic books telling young children to reach for the stars recently. It is unclear whether this particular story is meant to be of that encouraging ilk or a perhaps a lullaby. It fills many of the lullaby criteria with a softly rhyming text, positive message, and soothing illustrations. These, with a beautiful palette, become repetitive; while perhaps intended to lull the child to sleep, page turn after page turn end up dull—nothing new is introduced, anticipated, or delivered. In terms of encouraging children to accept challenges and grow, better books include the identically titled Vashti Harrison’s Dream Big, Little One or nonfiction books on well-known dreamers such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Barack Obama, to fill that need.
VERDICT While this one-note book both in story and art fails in the book’s mission to bolster confidence, libraries who are looking to add to their lullaby collection may find it useful.
