Gr 7 Up—For about a minute, Kaz Brekker's crew (Inej, Nina, Jesper, Matthias, and Wylan) can gloat over their successful heist at the Ice Court (The Six of Crows). But then Inej is kidnapped by Kaz's nemesis, Jan Van Eck, and suddenly there is no rest for the weary. A lesser mastermind might simply work to free Inej, but Kaz is always playing the long game, and every move he makes brings him one step closer to seeing Van Eck's ruin—finding the recipe to make jurda parem, the addictive and deadly drug that will ruin Grisha. Kaz and Crew know that jurda parem cannot hit the streets without endangering everyone. Book 2 of this duology immerses listeners immediately into a fast-paced thriller, and fans of Bardugo's earlier "Grisha" trilogy will enjoy seeing some crossover characters. In this audiobook, every plot and scheme will have listeners on the edge of their seats and relationships and alliances are more fleshed out, making these characters ones that will stay in listeners' minds for a long time. The work is narrated by eight readers, and each chapter and character has a different voice. While this is not necessary for the delivery of the story, it adds a sense of spontaneity to the experience.
VERDICT Highly recommended for teen collections. ["A must-purchase for all YA collections": SLJ 10/16 starred review of the Holt book.]
