Gr 2-5–Tyler uses colorful graphics to explore Earth’s geography. Each location is described using detailed paragraphs, vocabulary words, maps, and facts. Readers are given the name of each region, the landmarks or areas discovered, the person who is credited to that discovery, and the date of discovery. The aside facts highlight wildlife or characteristics of each place, while the maps for each region are labeled with landmarks or the first reported route taken, such as the expeditions of Mount Everest. Although the amount of text could be overwhelming to younger readers, the realistic yet simple illustrations are a good contrast within the composition.
VERDICT Fans of the National Geographic series or of Tyler’s other works, such as Adventures in Space, will enjoy his latest installment.
