PreS-Gr 1–Little Tom, a Black child dressed as a bright yellow dinosaur who romps like Maurice Sendak’s Max, leads a group of other dinosaurs in a rowdy dance perfect for a classroom movement break. Calling his friends by tapping rhythmically on a tree, he instructs them in this fun reiterative, rhyming game. The task at hand changes with each page turn (chomping, swishing, slashing, stomping), but the refrain is always “Let’s do the dinosaur. 1, 2, 3, ROAR, ROAR, ROAR.” A T. rex nears, and all the action stops—what will he do? Like any good storybook T. rex, he’ll join right in until everyone tumbles into a pile of sleepy dinosaurs. Robinson’s rhymes are spot-on, and Beardshaw’s adorable drawings of playful, never-scary dinos will make this a read-aloud that is revisited often.
VERDICT This is an ideal way to incorporate rhythm, rhyme, and movement into story time using reliably popular subjects—something to roar about!
