What Can You See? On the Farm

Tiger Tales. Aug. 2020. 12p. Board $9.99. ISBN 9781680106145.
Toddler-PreS–Inviting illustrations are paired with basic facts in this nonfiction book for toddlers and early preschoolers. The barn, the pigsty, and a roadside farmer’s market are included alongside the usual cast of domesticated animals. The text offers detailed information in a way that will not overwhelm very young readers. Engaging questions encourage adults to make this an active reading experience. Plentiful colored gouache and pencil illustrations provide just the right touch of calm. Each animal, building, tree, and turnip are drawn distinctly, aiding youngsters in learning how to identify objects. However, on some pages, awkward sentence placement results in the text being read out of sequence. For the intended audience, this will be of little consequence.
VERDICT A gratifying, topical hornbook that will appeal to toddlers and early preschoolers.
