K-Gr 2–Georgian Bay (a large bay of Lake Huron in Ontario) is the star of the show in this lyrical picture book from the author of Summer North Coming. The water and its surrounding environment are examined in myriad ways as one young girl spends an idyllic summer on its shores. When she dives beneath the water’s surface, the illustrations show snails, crayfish, and tumbled rocks, while above readers can observe swallows and a myriad of green islands that dot the landscape. Night ushers in a transformation; loons fly overhead as dark winds blow across the scene. A fanciful dream sequence is beautifully depicted as the narrator transforms shoals into elephants, whale pods emerge just beneath the water’s surface, and a ghostly steamship lays abandoned at the bottom of the lake.
VERDICT A beautiful and timeless love letter to the bay with nary a cell phone or computer to be found in its pages. Purchase as a wonderful addition for a lesson plan on the Great Lakes or for any reader who enjoys the wonder of nature and all that it holds.
