K-Gr 3–In this enchanting lift-the-flap picture book, Baker and Brewster take readers into the hidden worlds of the underground. The book peels back the layers of Montréal and London, the salt mines of Poland, the Flaming Cliffs in Mongolia, the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, the grasslands of the Great Plains, and many more exciting locations all over the world. Each location has a double-page spread with the illustration spanning from edge to edge. A quatrain introduces the reader to the location. The top third of the spreads show life above ground; the bottom two-thirds is a snapshot of the life and features of the underground. Flaps open to reveal hidden details and to further explain the scenes.
VERDICT Readers will be charmed by the surprises in this beautifully illustrated picture book. The flaps may fall victim to wear and tear, but the delight of the readers will be worth it. Highly recommended for elementary collections.
